So I’m going to explain that marketing is the art of selling things to people you don’t really know. I don’t mean that in a cliche way. If you’ve ever looked at a restaurant menu, you’d know that restaurants use marketing tactics to sell their food to you. Marketing is all about advertising your products and services so people see them differently.
In a way, marketing is the process of being able to use language that appeals to others, so that their desire to buy is fulfilled. When you advertise your product, you’re not just telling people about it; you’re telling them something about yourself that’s more important than the product. The more you advertise, the more you can sell. We’ve got that covered.
In this case, theyve even gone so far as to actually give us a reason to want to buy their product. It makes your life better, so that you can feel empowered knowing you can make a difference in the world, even if you cant actually do anything.
Its a fantastic marketing technique. When youre selling something, youre selling yourself. But when youre selling something youre also selling your company. In this case, the marketing tactic has been a fantastic way to make sure every company is being represented in a way that makes us feel like were part of their team.
This is a bit of a double-blind test in that there’s no way to know which of your employees is the real Colt Vahn or not. But I think it is a fantastic marketing ploy for the game. If you’re buying Deathloop, then you can be sure that the entire team is behind you. Because they aren’t just buying you a product, they are buying you a team.
This is exactly why Deathloop is such a unique game. The company is so tiny, they can only afford to take on two employees (one in the US and one in Australia) and one server (one in the US and one in Australia). Which means they can only afford to pay out half of their employees’ salaries in advance, and they need to pay the other half when the game is released. That money is going to go towards marketing costs.
The game is so small and so focused on stealthy gameplay (and thus cost efficiency) that it has a very unique and compelling marketing angle. Basically, Deathloop is a game about being a ruthless little killer who can use various powers to keep the party at bay. This includes things like invisibility, camouflage, rapid-fire pistol shots, and even a few “punch ’em in the face” powers.
