This is the part where I feel like I am being a bit too hard on them. I really don’t think I am, but I am just pointing out I am not the only one.
The firms I talk about here have a marketing strategy. This means they are putting together an event, promotion, or marketing campaign to achieve certain goals. They plan the campaign, they plan the event, and they plan the implementation. One of the first things you should do when you enter a conversation with the techies is to ask them what their strategy is. If their marketing strategy is to find the “perfect” consumer, you can quickly find out that is not the case.
The best way to find out what a company’s marketing strategy is is to get them to talk about it. Sometimes, you can tell by the tone of their voice or their body language. This is one of those times because my friends in marketing all know I’m one of the most tech-savvy guys on the planet. No one was able to get in touch with me, and I’m not interested in discussing marketing strategy.
The worst way to discuss marketing is to assume it is not going to happen. In this case, in a meeting with the marketing department, I had to explain to one of the guys that marketing is only about finding the perfect consumer. My friends in marketing, however, are not the best listeners. I could tell they didn’t like my answer and they kept asking me questions about marketing. Eventually, I had to tell them that I am definitely not interested in discussing marketing.
I have to admit, in my opinion, the marketing team at firms is a bit of a bunch of jerks. They are more interested in selling a product than in telling us that the Marketing department has a plan to make us love them. However, in a meeting with the Marketing department, I was able to point out that marketing is about finding the perfect consumer, not selling a product. It is about finding the perfect consumer because that is a goal we all aspire to.
Although it may be about selling a product, it is still a marketing approach. The marketing approach is always about selling a service or product, not a product of a technology.
