I am so convinced that self-awareness is the key to overall happiness. So much of our lives is centered around our opinions, our relationships, our work, our personal, and our financial well-being.
That’s why I was so excited about this article on southwest behavioral health prescott valley. The article is a bit long, so I’m going to split it up into two parts. The first part is more of a self-awareness lesson and the second part looks at the importance of self-awareness in general.
The article is written by Michael B. Smith, a researcher with the University of North Carolina who specializes in the study of happiness. We’ve included a link to his article in the sidebar for a more thorough read. Overall, he goes through a process of “self-awareness” that goes beyond thinking about ourselves. In the first section, he goes through a study where he asked subjects to write down a short sentence.
One of the most important things you can do for yourself is to get out of your own head. To do that you have to take into account what other people are doing. In this study, he had people write down a list of all the things they do to stay alive. They used to be people who were alive, but now they are dead. He then asked them to count the number of people they knew who were still alive, then asked them to put this number in a little box.
So, in the end, his subjects had a pretty good idea of how their lives were going to end.
And we can’t always tell when we’re thinking about our behavior and it is not about our behavior. It’s when it is. Like in this study, people were asked to write down a list of activities they had performed in the past month. They weren’t told that they were going to be asked to list out all their activities. Then they got to the part where they were asked to circle the number of activities they had performed.
In this study, they gave study participants a list of activities to write down. It included things like “shower,” “dinner,” “dancing,” “talking to friends,” “seeing a movie,” and “not reading.” The researchers asked the subjects to fill in the blank spots with activities they had performed in the past month. Then they asked them to circle the number of activities they had performed.
And to make a long story short, the number of activities they said they had done seemed to be linked to their future performance. For example, the number of activities they said they had done made them more likely to perform certain activities in the future. This, of course, doesn’t mean they’ll be happy if they find something they haven’t done since the last study. But it does suggest that the number of activities people performed in the past month can predict their future performance.
I have to say, this sounds pretty interesting. It’s like a more accurate version of the famous Stanford Prison Experiment. Except instead of being locked up, the people in this study were actually allowed to move around the prison as needed. So, for example, if someone needed to go run a marathon, they might take off running for a few days or weeks. But if they had been able to move around a bit more, they might have been able to run more.
You can’t expect anything to creep up on you when you just read a blog. We all have our own unique needs for things we need to know. In my experience, the only time I’ve really been on a blog is when I’m looking to write.
