So how does a technical marketing manager describe themselves? I think that’s a pretty broad question, but the short answer is that they are an entrepreneurial leader whose role is to help companies and organizations achieve their goals by developing and managing their marketing strategies and tactics.
Technical marketing managers are responsible for ensuring that marketing organizations are in full-force with their marketing department and are effective at what they do. Their role and responsibilities depend on what they do. For example, they are responsible for the execution of the company’s marketing plan, but they also must be a part of marketing strategy meetings (i.e. the person who sets the strategy for the entire marketing department) as well as the overall marketing communications team.

In my marketing role as a technical marketing manager I am working to support sales people on their technical marketing, so they can be as effective as possible. I believe that there is power in understanding how to work like a salesperson, and the importance of having good communication skills. There are many people who have had marketing managers and sales managers with these skills, and a lot of them have had this opportunity and they are very happy with the results.
I work in an office with a bunch of sales and marketing executives. And I’ve never seen anyone come out of the office without a smile on their face. But when I walk into the office, after a month of being in a job where I’m trying to be like a sales person, I look around and everyone is still smiling.
I’ve never met anyone who didn’t have a good reason for smiling. But what I’ve seen is that when you’re trying to be like a sales person, you have to be able to communicate in a way that is so un-salesy that even people on the other side of the counter at the grocery store won’t catch on.
You can tell how successful a company is because the smile on their faces is so big that it can be seen from miles away, but the actual act of smiling is the most important thing about marketing. For the first few months it really helped that I look professional, but like I said, Ive seen people from Walmart look like Im on the next set of commercials.
